Has the BBC created a new market opportunity for security cylinders?

Last month the BBC programme Inside Out featured a lengthy documentary on Lock Snapping and general cylinder vulnerability. My view of this is well known as I believe it was irresponsible and the people behind this release to the BBC were not motivated by concerns over the public’s safety but just motivated by pure greed. The question of cylinder vulnerability has now been featured on 5 Live, Local Newspapers and we are advised it will feature heavily nationally on 19th March on BBC’s The One Show.

UAP+ Zero Lift Anti-Snap Cylinder

For some time now the quickest and most cost effective solution to Lock Snapping is to upgrade basic euro cylinder locks to security enhanced Anti-Snap Cylinder locks, which have anti-snap cuts on both sides of the cylinder. With an Anti-Snap Cylinder, if unreasonable force is applied to one end of the cylinder, it only breaks away to the anti-snap line and leaves the locking mechanism still inside the door (see diagram). Now the official police approved scheme ‘Secured by Design’ and British Standards Institute have been working to improve door security – specifically against Lock Snapping. New standards have recently been introduced to overcome this problem, such as using Anti-Snap Cylinders like our own UAP+ Zero Lift Cylinders, in conjunction with security handles.

There are a few other cylinders options, but generally price for these is a big issue, making them unaffordable for most fabricators and the average consumer. The BS Kitemarked UAP+ Zero Lift Cylinder is one of the most popular security cylinders on the market, offering good security at an affordable price. In combination with a security handle set it is almost unbeatable.

What about Lock Bumping?

Lock Bumping is another technique used throughout the world to quickly and quietly gain entry to a property. UAP+ Zero Lift Cylinders are also Anti-Bump. But for the end consumer there is a way to upgrade existing locks to make them bump resistant without having to replace them, and that is by using the very popular Pickbuster Anti-Bump Solution. Upgrading a normal cylinder to make them bump resistant takes just seconds, can be applied by just about anyone and is very low cost.

Sales Director Chris Pankhurst says it was the best event ever for leading tool and security experts TradeLocks, who featured an exclusive exhibition range of must-have products at exclusive discounted show prices.

With the TradeLocks stand teeming with visitors throughout, thanks to a host of not-to-be-missed discounts and stacks of freebies, it was one of the busiest stands at the show which took places at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham.

“The Locksmiths’ Exhibition is always one of the key industry events of the year and once again it was a very successful one for TradeLocks,” says Chris. “We picked up a record number of orders and our new products were really well received.

“Personally it was great to see a number of returning customers from previous exhibitions but we also met a number of new customers too. My lasting impression was just how well respected TradeLocks has become in the industry.

“Of course, one of the reasons people come to exhibitions like this is the opportunity to get their hands on the very latest products and pick up some special deals and we were determined not to disappoint anyone.

“From our point of view this was the biggest and most successful Locksmiths’ Exhibition and a lot of the credit has to go to Mick Friend and his team for organising the event and ensuring a fantastic weekend for both exhibitors and attendees. There is an awful lot of work that goes into making events like this a success and they made sure there was a real buzz about the place throughout the two days.”

TradeLocks Sales Executive Andy Bolton said: “I’ve been to a number of exhibitions since joining TradeLocks in 2009 and this was one of the most successful.

“I really enjoyed being able to meet customers and put names to faces. It was also a good chance for people who wanted advice from our sales team to have a chat and for visitors to see live product demonstrations.”

TradeLocks is one of the most respected names in the security market, with a reputation built by working hand in hand with the leading names in the industry to develop a product range that is designed solely with a Locksmith’s needs in mind.

Innovative product development, quality manufacture and first class customer service are now the hallmarks of the TradeLocks brand. The Signature Range epitomises the TradeLocks approach. It features tools devised by some of the most respected figures in the locksmith world — the likes of Martin Pink, Chris Belcher, Don Braidwood and Nigel Tolley.

At TradeLocks we are always on the lookout for the next big thing. If you have ever thought to yourself, “If only they developed a tool to do this.” or “I’ve made a tool to do that, no one else has, I’d love to see it in production”, then this is your chance to see your ideas brought to life.

A drop-in centre that cares for the homeless has been given a helping hand – thanks to UAP TradeLocks.

Having recently opened 3TC – a new café and catering facility – on their premises Albert Close Trading Estate, Whitefield, UAP TradeLocks is now offering a lifeline to their community’s most vulnerable people who depend on Bury Housing Concern for survival.

The not-for-profit charity carries out important work for the area, not only by helping the homeless with food and essentials but by continuing to work with these people to rehouse, rehabilitate and provide ongoing support for them.

The company, a UK leader in door security, hardware and locksmith tools, has pledged to donate enough food to feed 120 people a week for an entire year and will provide a soup kettle, as well as giving the charity a sum of money each month to help with bus fares etc. and they are planning fundraising events to take place throughout the year.

In addition the company has promised to work with Bury Housing Concern to ensure all doors and windows in their building on Tithebarn Street are safe and secure and offer free checks and home security upgrades on properties used in the rehousing scheme.

UAP TradeLocks is also campaigning to raise awareness for the charity which they believe delivers a vital service.

Managing Director David Jennings says: “Bury Housing Concern do a fantastic job for underprivileged people with very little funding.

“Not many people in Bury know about the work that they do and the homeless drop-in relies entirely on charitable donations. I’ve witnessed myself the work they carry out, it’s not just about giving someone a meal, they provide a real lifeline and help with everything from accommodation to furnishings and court dates.

“We are happy to use the facilities that we have to help with the vital work that they do for our community. Bury housing Concern help people who are looking to get their lives back on track and without their help, rehabilitating them back into the community just wouldn’t be possible.”

Linda O’Sullivan of Bury Housing concern says: “This is really brilliant, we really appreciate the kind-hearted gesture. Not having to worry about paying for food means that we can put the little money we have to better use.

“We would also like to raise awareness for Bury Housing Concern and thanks to UAP and 3TC we hope this will be possible. There are only two of us working here and we desperately need volunteers – any help is greatly appreciated.”

The tool offers rapid access, leaving no tell-tale scuffs and marks on the door or framework.

Originally designed by the highly respected double glazing repair engineer Don Braidwood in the mid-nineties, the tool wasn’t known to others in the industry until Don became familiar on the locksmith forums. Don started to run double glazing repair courses approved by the Institute of Certified Locksmiths where he would demonstrate how easy it is to use his tool, and it became obvious that while it wasn’t yet available on the market, it was exactly what anyone working in the uPVC industry needed and would therefore become a must have tool.

With locksmiths rating this piece of kit so highly, we decided to go one step further and develop a tool that would beat all the others on the market.

Working alongside Don Braidwood, we have manufactured our door spreaders in stainless steel as a guarantee that they will be both hardwearing and corrosion proof, and are by far the lowest cost on the market.

We are offering two versions of this tool – the standard 455mm, and the 755mm which offers slightly more leverage – or you can get the twin pack for outstanding value!

This tool is ideal for wooden or uPVC doors with a latch as it fits through the letterbox to push the latch allowing the door to open within seconds - totally removing the time consuming process of trying to pick an ever spinning barrell or having to destructively snap the cylinder. This handy tool allows for none destructive entry within seconds.

But what makes this tool extra appealing is that we looked at all the current letterbox tools available on the market and discussed personally with users what they wanted in a letterbox tool. It really is a tool for professional locksmiths, by professional locksmiths.

After much research, we then sat down and designed the tool a year and a half ago. We have since refined and refined the original concept.

The Pink’s Letterbox Tool is made from a combination of Aluminium and Carbon Fibre which utilises snap on technology. This gives the user the lightest tool on the market which can be adjusted with fingertip control to the millimetre if required. The Pink’s Letterbox Tool is designed to work in harmony with the Pink’s Camera attachment that we also supply.

We have confidence that this is the best, most cost effective, Letterbox Tool in the market, and really takes the LBT into the 21st Century.

2012 has already started off to be a very promising year for the highly regarded door hardware and Locksmith tools supplier UAP TradeLocks as they secure the contract to become Borg’s Master Distributor in the UK.

UAP TradeLocks Managing Director David Jennings begins to explain about his deal with Borg: “I have known John at Borg for many years, but had never really taken a deep interest in their keypad type locks for access control.”

“I always knew they were really high quality digi-locks, but I didn’t know how good they were or how comprehensive the range was until we recently began work on opening our Trade Counter and decided we needed to take on a high quality digi-lock range.”

For those of you thinking that a digi-lock isn’t for you, then David suggests you think otherwise as he predicts digi-locks will make a huge sales impact on uPVC commercial doors over the next few years.

“Digi-locks have a market in every commercial building, every hospital, every public building, every school, every caretaker’s cupboard, every police station and more, from John O’Groats to Lands’ end and beyond.”

In the middle of researching the Borg range the penny dropped for David as he fell in love with the uPVC digi-lock.

“I’ve been involved in the uPVC industry for 15 years, but I haven’t ever seen anything as good as the Borg range before. The range even has a product designed specifically for Aluminum doors!”

And that brings David onto another point; “I always thought changing the code on a digi-lock needed a lot of skill and patience, but not with the new models from Borg, it literally takes a few minutes whereas I have bought a competitor’s product to see how theirs compares and gave up after 10 minutes.”

So what makes Borg stand out from other digi-locks?

“The weakest part of digi-locks has always been the ease to by-pass them by getting the code easily. I know many may think that this is a Paul Daniels trick, but on most digi-locks it’s easy. The most common way is to simply tension the bolt and feel which buttons have tightened up and those are the ones that will open the lock. Borg have overcome this massive security flaw by designing and patenting an anti tension plate which they now fit to key models in their range.”

So why with the best product by far in the industry do Borg need UAP TradeLocks, and why do UAP TradeLocks need Borg?

“UAP Tradelocks accept that to grow we need to enter into strategic relationships with others, including new suppliers like Borg. As we see it, the Borg range is the best. We have a distribution deal that enables us to offer these products at competitive prices. So why would we want to re-create the wheel? Borg accept they are brilliant at product design and development but not so good at marketing and distribution. That is where the tie-up with UAP TradeLocks makes a great deal of sense.”

As Spock would no doubt say if he worked for UAP TradeLocks, “Borg locks will live long and prosper”…
